Maladaptive Daydreaming: where wild minds come to rest
I have seen a few times on the site that there are people who have never suffered from childhood traumas or abuse of any kind and yet are severe daydreamers. According to Dr. Eli Somer's research on MD, people who suffer from it most likely have suffered through traumatic childhood experiences and/or abuse. What are reasons for someone with a "normal" childhood to begin MDing?

I don't remember starting. I've always done it.
Someone asked me about a genetic link not too long ago, so I asked Jayne and Cynthia. Jayne said we're not sure because it hasn't been studied much but that she's definitely heard of people in multiple generations having it.
I have done this since birth. No clue why. It would be interesting to see if MD had some sort of genetic link or something like that :)
I'm the youngest in a big family, outgoing, seemingly an extrovert and I started because I was lonely and didn't have a lot of people my age around me. I had older parents and older brothers and sisters and I was bored at a young age. I was probably depressed perhaps and didn't know what it was.
To answer this question personally, though I did experience abuse as a child, I think I was just born this way. I've been doing this all my life, and I think the abuse just made it worse.
Fay, in Dr. Cynthia Schupak and Jayne Bigelsen's study, they did find out the percentage of MDers who had trauma. I forget the exact number, but they said it was no higher than among normal people. You can find a link to it on the links page.
I started MDing because I was bored and alone, that was mild but when I started to encounter some disappointments and failures ,it became excessive and out of control.
I didn't have childhood trauma, aside from bullying, but I did have adulthood trauma which caused me to MD even more.
One day, when they have done more thorough research on this issue, it would be so interesting to know the proportion of MD sufferers who did not experience childhood adversity versus the proportion who did.
