Hello all!

My name is Seth Petel and I am a research assistant at the Developmental Disabilities and Mental Health Laboratory at York University in Toronto, ON.

My supervisor and I are conducting a study on maladaptive daydreaming and dissociation in neurodivergent adults (aged 18+). To our knowledge, this is the first study looking directly at dissociation and maladaptive daydreaming in neurodivergent adults this comprehensively.

We are hoping that users of this site have a vested interest in formalized academic research on maladaptive daydreaming, especially as it relates to certain traits (such as ADHD, autism, repetitive behaviours, sensory processing issues, etc.) We would greatly appreciate your help if you are interested in participating!

Information about the study:

  • Participation is anonymous.
  • The study format is an online questionnaire that takes roughly 30-minutes to complete.
  • We plan on submitting a paper to journal review once data collection and analysis is finished.
  • We do not require formal diagnoses, self-identification is enough to qualify!
  • This study has been approved by York University's Office of Research Ethics (ORE) Human Participants Review Committee (certificate # e2026-003).

If you are interested, please send a brief email to lpanetta@yorku.ca to receive the questionnaire link.

Thank you so much for your time and consideration!

Hi everyone,

I'm Ori Meidan, a doctoral student at the Consciousness and Psychopathology Lab (Prof. Nirit Soffer-Dudek) and a member of the ICMDR. You can find my details on the ICMDR website.

We're running a study on how maladaptive daydreaming relates to autobiographical memory and self-concept, areas that don't get nearly enough research attention in MD, and that many of you have described experiencing in really significant ways.

What's involved: A set of self-report questionnaires and a few short tasks, done online, completely anonymous. It takes roughly 40 minutes in one sitting.

Who can participate: English-speaking adults (18+), anywhere in the world.

I realize 40 minutes is a real time commitment, and I don't want to understate that. The reason is that we're measuring things that are rarely studied together, and one of the goals of this work is to build the kind of evidence base that helps MD get taken more seriously in clinical and academic settings. That only happens with studies that are thorough enough to hold up.

If you're able to take part, it genuinely matters. Further details and contact info are in the consent form at the link. Participation is voluntary and you can stop at any time. Happy to answer any questions in the comments.

Call for participants

Hello, everyone!

I'm a psychology student, and I am inviting you to participate in the study I'm developing for my master's thesis about the internal experience of people with Maladaptive Daydreaming. My interest in this subject comes from the fact that I also have MD, ever since I was a child, and I really want to contribute to the existing knowledge there is about this phenomenon.

My study is titled “Between the real and the imagined: a study of the subjective experience of Maladaptive Daydreaming” and it will be focused on your personal experience of daydreaming. Topics include the content of the daydreams (such as themes, characters, universes, and triggers), how they begin and end, how they have evolved over time, their impact on your life (both positive and negative), and how others’ perceptions may influence your experience.

It will consist of of a one-to-one online interview with me, lasting approximately one hour. The data collected will be confidential and only I will have access to it. You can also do the interview with your camera turned off, if you'd feel more comfortable that way.

If you are an adult (over 18 years-old) who identifies with the phenomenon of Maladaptive Daydreaming, speak either English or Portuguese, and would like to share your experiences, please email me at: 35362@ufp.edu.pt

I am very interested in hearing from you :)

Call for participants

How do our inner worlds shape our sense of self? The Consciousness and Psychopathology Lab at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, directed by Prof. Nirit Soffer-Dudek, invites you to contribute to a pioneering study exploring the intricate connections between maladaptive daydreaming, autobiographical memory, and self-concept. Led by Ori Meidan, a doctoral researcher and member of the International Consortium for Maladaptive Daydreaming Research (ICMDR), this project represents a vital step toward establishing a deeper diagnostic understanding and formal recognition of maladaptive daydreaming within the global scientific community.

We are currently seeking English-speaking adults aged 18 and older to share their experiences through this anonymous online platform. Your participation involves completing a series of self-report questionnaires and engaging in brief, specialized tasks designed to capture the nuances of cognitive and psychological processes. While the study requires approximately 40 minutes of your time, this depth of data is precisely what allows us to build the rigorous evidence base needed to advocate for better clinical awareness and specialized support for those who experience these symptoms.

By participating, you are directly supporting a broader movement to bridge the gap between individual experience and academic recognition. Your contribution is entirely voluntary, and you remain free to withdraw at any time. For a full overview of the study’s ethical framework and objectives, please visit the consent form at the link provided below. We sincerely value your time and your commitment to advancing our understanding of the human mind.

Participants wanted for research study

Title of Study: Exploring Therapeutic Experiences of Maladaptive Daydreaming: Insights from an Integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy perspective

You are invited to take part in a research study examining the experiences of individuals who engage in maladaptive daydreaming (MD) and who have previously received therapy in which their daydreaming was openly discussed, explored, or addressed. The purpose of this study is to explore how people who experience maladaptive daydreaming (MD) have found therapy when this aspect of their life was discussed or worked on.

Maladaptive daydreaming here means spending long periods in vivid, immersive daydreams that feel hard to control. These daydreams often interfere with everyday life, such as work, study, social activities, or sleep. People who experience MD may feel a strong urge to return to their daydreams and have regular and multiple daydreams on a daily basis.

This is a study as part of a Masters Degree dissertation, and has full ethical approval.

Who Can Take Part?
You may be eligible to participate if:

  • You are over 18
  • You identify as someone who has experienced maladaptive daydreaming, and
  • You have engaged in any form of psychological therapy (e.g., counselling, psychotherapy, CBT, online therapy, etc.) in which your daydreaming was discussed or explored

This will involve an online interview that will last between 45-60 minutes.

Interested in Participating?

You can read through this consent form and interview questions, and I will get in contact with you:
