In my fantasy world, I don’t just ruminate on my characters and their actions, I think a great deal about the places they live, and where they spend their lives. Setting and place do a lot to heighten the realism of a daydream. Once I’ve thought up enough detail about a certain place, it becomes established as part of the landscape of my daydream world.

I’d love to know about some of the places people have created for their daydream worlds.

Do your daydreams take place in fantastical settings? Futuristic settings?

Do they take place in the real world of today, in settings that everyone knows about and can relate to, like Times Square, New York, or the Eiffel Tower in Paris, to name two examples? Could you say that your daydreams borrow, in terms of place, from the shared reality that we all know?

Or do your daydreams take place in the real world of today, but in really specific settings that you’ve tailored to your characters and dramas?

Most of my daydream landscape is the real world with scenes in places that everybody knows about. But I’ve borrowed heavily from some real-world places, like one famous estate in particular that’s on the National Register of Historic Places and which I actually visited once.

My daydreams usually take place in the same little town i've created. Even though the town is fictional, i've noticed that some details come from my real life. For example, one of my characters' houses is entirely made up except for one hallway that happens to be the same as in my aunt's house. This can be a huge trigger when i'm in one of these "duplicated" places, because I sometimes get confused and think i'm dreaming when i'm not.

Well, in my DD, I'm still me, so I live with the same people, in the same house (so when we moved in real life, we moved in my DD, and this new place is now my DD Sandy's home too) but, like, I have a friend who isn't human, and she lives in Bottle Lake Forest, in a clearing which you can't find if you don't know how to find it, and her and her family and others of her kind live in a group in underground caves there which you wouldn't see if you didn't know were there (but it doesn't really exist in BL forest, of course) so I guess some places are real, some are variations of real places.

My daydreams change and along with a new daydream comes a new location and new characters. The only thing that remains the same in all of my daydreams is the main character, which is the 'me' I'd love to be. But in different daydreams I'm a different age with a different life.

So in terms of settings I've 'lived' in various places in various countries. I'm currently living in Germany in my daydreams. I've never been to Germany so I don't know what the streets and cities look like so I just imagine what it would look like and take it from there. My I've imagined the apartment I'm living in, my neighbours, friends, restaurants etc and it's all just been created in my imagination down to the last details of decor. Some characters are real life ppl who I've never met, others are completely made up.

So going back to your question, my locations are very real, but how I perceive then to look is completely fabricated :-)

I DO THAT. well the part about their houses
they always end up being a house that ive been to before
sometimes i dont even remember whos house it is lol

Mine take place in specific cities.  I've spent time collecting floorplans of penthouses in NYC and London as well as photos of rooms, art work, furniture, and people.  I keep everything organized my folders on my Ipad.  I haven't added much new lately - it was fun when I started, I still enjoy the occasional review, but is more of a comfort than exciting.
