Maladaptive Daydreaming: where wild minds come to rest
I really want to draw more daydream things out in real life, the only problem is that it never turns out as good as it looks in my head as I am not that good at drawing :(
My problem is that on my computer I am good at drawing the surroundings, in fact, I have drawn pictures of every room in my daydream character's house, but I cant draw people, I am just not very good at drawing people.
I am better at drawing people on paper, but its still not that good compared to pretty much every drawing of people I have seen...but I cant draw the surroundings very well because it is just so inconvenient-on my computer I can draw straight lines easily, and also I find it easier to draw more detail in the background. I can make patterned wallpaper and stuff by drawing a little bit and copying and pasting it, and I also have put posters up on their walls that I found on Google Images.

When I started drawing from m daydreams, it was all stick figures. As I continued to draw almost everyday I improved to the point of where I'm at today (just check my blog posts). It's a hard thing to do: I've been going at it for over ten years now. What I do sometimes when drawing people, is "cheat" a little, by finding a person on google images and just tracing the outline onto my drawings and just fill it in from there, after doing that a lot, I figured out by muscle memory how to draw people well. Everyone starts off pretty bad at drawing, it gets better after trying relentlessly for awhile.
I would like to draw more as well. I was quite prolific when i was younger but over the years i've succumbed to self-doubt and anxiety. I usually criticize myself too much so i haven't even started a new project. I think it's just a matter of courage to practice every day and to accept that your work is going to be pretty lackluster for a while until you gain enough experience. It does take years to produce quality work, like Richard Quest said. I read somewhere that it takes like 10,000 practice hours to become an expert, be it in art, writing, or music.
I forced myself to start drawing again a few days ago, I sketch when I'm commuting. I just draw about anything, mostly people. What works best for me is to take a picture with my phone and work from that, since it has already flattened the image in 2D. Also, if you see some drawing you like, try copying it. I learnt to draw mainly by doing that.
I use a 3$ notebook and a mechanical pen. You don't need super expensive supplies when you're starting out, the point is to get going and keep at it, like Richard said, that's how you build it up.
