MatthewR replied to Sally's discussion I am Lost: MD, weed and sadness
"Hello, Sally. My experiences at university were similar to yours. I also felt depressed and anxious, and I procrastinated a lot. Our daydreams give us a false sense of what we want and who we really are. We imagine only the ideal versions of…"

MatthewR replied to Fallen Messenger's discussion OCD & Trauma, do they effect your alter-ego?
"This is an excellent discussion, which has already given me a lot to think about. i have to agree with Eretaia. She made the distinction between 3rd-person fantasies and fantasies involving an idealized self. If i understand the logic behind this,…"

Fitri Kamelia commented on MatthewR's blog post The 3 Kinds of Daydreamers
"Very interesting. Maybe the problem is how human's psychology and emotions are very dynamic, so we can't 100% rely on categories.... At the end, categories finally often used as formality, based on what they see the majority events that…"

MatthewR replied to Vesta Harford's discussion How did your MDD develop?
"I used to create imaginary friends. I do remember talking to people in my head when i was younger, but i didn't think that was weird. I was a very lonely child, and i didn't have many stable relationships back then. My friends in real life…"

Fear and the Real Reason I Daydream

Posted on March 26, 2017 at 9:11pm 10 Comments

This is a long post, but here it goes...

Dd’ing is something i’ve done all my life. I started when i was 4 or 5 and just kept doing it. It’s fine for a child but problematic for an adult.

This is not to say that daydreaming is bad, but that dd’ing excessively serves a purpose that is unhealthy for me. Daydreaming is a way to get what i want without trying, to have great moments in my imagination without risking rejection, and to feel powerful without any…

The 3 Kinds of Daydreamers

Posted on March 24, 2017 at 9:45pm 12 Comments

This is just something from observation, but i get the impression that there are 3 kinds of people on this site:

  1. Neurotic Daydreamers - these are the dd’ers who are closest to the “maladaptive” definition. They use daydreams to sustain an idealized sense of self that compensates for low self-esteem, essentially “growing on the useless side of life” because these daydreams don’t improve our situation; they unconsciously serve to spare us the pain of real emotion and the…

Has Anyone Taken Paxil (Paroxetine)?

Posted on August 3, 2014 at 6:59pm 5 Comments

In the past couple of weeks I have been seeing a doctor for major depression, anxiety - especially social anxiety disorder. I also fit the profile of someone with an avoidant personality. When i was discussing my symptoms to the doctor I described my excessive compulsion to fantasize, how i pace, and how i can't focus sometimes because my urge to daydream is so powerful. My doctor didn't seem as interested in Maladaptive Daydreaming but assumed it was an aspect of being socially avoidant. I…
