Maladaptive Daydreaming: where wild minds come to rest
Hello everybody. I'm naturally inquisitive person and ever since I have found this website, I'm astonished by a sheer number of fellow MDers. I'd love to know how your dreamworlds (DW) differ from mine in some ways. I'm not sure if these questions had been asked in the past, so bear with me.
Brief replies or elaborate ones are both welcomed. Feel free to answer whichever questions you are comfortable with. Here it comes:
1. Where is your DW located? Is it your own country or at least planet Earth and if so, are you DDing about modern times or the past/future? Or is your DW located in other worlds/realities/galaxy?
2. This question is connected to the first one. Do you DD only about real people (planet Earth only) and somehow possible situations or do you have different races/species or supernatural elements in your DW?
3. What are the professions/occupations in your DW? Esp. those hold by the recurrent characters in your DW or even characters who you identify with (that is if you do identify with some of your characters).
4. Do you have a peaceful DW (quiet family life, hanging with friends, etc.) with little to no conflicts whatsoever... sort of like rose garden trope or are there (from time to time) any adversaries/precarious situations which the characters have to struggle through first?
5. This one may sound strange, since DDers are the creators of their worlds, but it reveals some of our own desires and expectations... Which personality traits/qualities do you admire the most in:
- the characters you identify with,
- the other inhabitants of your DW (e.g. your partner/spouse/friends/relatives/co-workers or just casual acquaintances).
6. Last one is for DDers who draw inspiration from the fiction/celebrities. Can you write down names some of concrete celebrities, who are included in your DW? Or names of fandoms you enjoy (books, films, tv shows...)? Write as many as you want, I wonder how many heavy duty fans are here. :-)

1. My DD's can be located ANYWHERE. 2. My characters are always people - fictional mostly, but occasionally real. 3. occupations aren't really the focal point of my DD's, but they usually are whatever the fictional character does in a book or TV (like Sherlock Holmes would still be a consulting detective, for example) 4. My DD's are seldom if ever mundane, dealing with real life, such as just hanging out - too boring for me I guess. 5. admired qualities are adventurous, intelligence, courage, tenacity, athleticism, hope and faith. 6. I'd rather not be specific, so mostly I DD scifi, fantasy, and adventure.
-- I have two main day dream worlds that I invented. On is in present times, but with a fantasy twist, in America. The other is in about 70-100 years into the future in a western type civilisation but no known countries. That last one also has fantasy elements but not like the other daydream world
-- Since lots of my day dreams take place in settings from books, movies and tv shows (mostly the fantasy genre) there are a wide variety of races and I never really incorporate real life people into them. Magic is pretty much always a part of my dd.
-- I have one character who i homeless, another that is an assassin, an interpreter/translator, one has too many occupations to name but mostly a negotiator and peacekeeper but often a soldier (he's part of a rebel group where numbers are limited to fill jobs, lol).
-- Lots and lots of problems, my dd are built on issues, conflicts, and problems. They play out rather violently in my mind kind of like action movies.
-- their confidence in themselves, and their wittiness, their out going nature, their intelligence, their skills (most have magical powers. one character is ambidextrous and has photographic memory. so jealous... :P )
-- i get no inspiration from celebrities, just the movies they act in. anything fantasy from harry potter (books/movies) to supernatural (tv show) to eragon (book). i usually just add my characters in and let them do whatever my mind wants them to do with the original characters and plot in the story.
interesting...

mine is located in california. on earth. and its modern time and in the future. its also located in NYC at times cause one of my characters moves there
2. This question is connected to the first one. Do you DD only about real people (planet Earth only) and somehow possiblesituations or do you have different races/species or supernatural elements in your DW?
yeah real people
3. What are the professions/occupations in your DW? Esp. those hold by the recurrent characters in your DW or even characters who you identify with (that is if you do identify with some of your characters).
my four main characters:
one of my characters works in an office when she is older- ive yet to think of a job for her tho. but i daydream her in an office in a cubicle and having to wear dressy-casual clothing and you know-cliche office stuff
one of my characters is in an 80s cover band and they play at weddings, fundraisers, dances and shit like that, she also is a dolphin trainer and she owns a bar (that sounds pretty crazy but if you knew my daydream you'd understand!!)
one of them becomes a hair dresser
and my other character becomes a radio dj
4. Do you have a peaceful DW (quiet family life, hanging with friends, etc.) with little to no conflicts whatsoever... sort of like rose garden trope or are there (from time to time) any adversaries/precarious situations which the characters have to struggle through first?
my daydream is basically them just living their lives but theres struggles and drama and what not along the way....

this is embarassing because i only use celebrities whos faces i think would work well for the character i want to create-even if i like the celebrity or not
taylor momsen
kristen stewart
harry styles (SHUT UP OK I DONT EVEN LIKE ONE DIRECTION I HATE THEM SO MUCH BUT HES CUTE SO IT WORKS)
fran drescher (mom character)
courtney cox (mom character)
demi lovato (kinda....this character only looks like demi in ONE specific picture of demi and its really hard to find)
the rest of my characters ive either made up or based their looks off people ive seen in real life
Hi, thank you all for participating. I had no idea that so many members will reply to my question. Thank you again. I'll round it off with my own answers.
1. A completely different world (more like a galaxy), but I get inspired with the real places and landscapes on Earth to enrich it as much as possible.
2. I use both. There are fantasy/sci-fi/supernatural species/elements/powers and realistic situations as well.
3. As diverse as it can get.
4. My DW can be quite peaceful, when it is not besieged, contaminated, terorrized by yet another criminal organization, some characters start with their personal issues, etc.
5. Honour, wittiness, compassion, love for knowledge, loyality, strength, ambition, creativity, tolerance... and of course sense of humour.
6. I do not use any celebrities in my DW with the exception of artists like musical bands playing in the night club. I'm afraid I used/abused way to many books/films to keep track.
1. Where is your DW located? Is it your own country or at least planet Earth and if so, are you DDing about modern times or the past/future? Or is your DW located in other worlds/realities/galaxy?
My DW is located in a fantasy world, completely different from Earth. There is no connection to Earth, whatsoever.
2. This question is connected to the first one. Do you DD only about real people (planet Earth only) and somehow possible situations or do you have different races/species or supernatural elements in your DW?
My DW is a fantasy world, so there are a ton of fantasy elements like magic, strange creatures, different races, etc. None of my characters are real people. None of the situations I DD about are possible.
3. What are the professions/occupations in your DW? Esp. those hold by the recurrent characters in your DW or even characters who you identify with (that is if you do identify with some of your characters).
Since it is in a fantasy world, none of my recurring characters have real jobs. My main character is sort of like a ranger in LOTR, she just roams around, fighting battles and trying to protect people. She also is a commander of the army in the war.
4. Do you have a peaceful DW (quiet family life, hanging with friends, etc.) with little to no conflicts whatsoever... sort of like rose garden trope or are there (from time to time) any adversaries/precarious situations which the characters have to struggle through first?
No, my DDs are almost never peaceful. They always have battles and wars and violence in them. A quiet family life is too boring for me..
5. This one may sound strange, since DDers are the creators of their worlds, but it reveals some of our own desires and expectations... Which personality traits/qualities do you admire the most in:
I love almost all of the qualities in my main character. She is brave, selfless, calm, strong, clever, smart, fearless, collected, mysterious, wise, cunning, and powerful. She knows how to manipulate people to get whatever she wants, but she rarely does. She prefers asking, and using logic to convince them. She is so strong, she can handle whatever life throws at her. She handles pain (physical) really well, there is no wound that she can't wear. She had a really rough childhood and adolescence, but instead of letting it eat her alive, she uses it to make her stronger and a better person. She is just a amazing person.

I'm going to go in order of what books/movies I added to my DW. Pokémon (I started DDing when I was 9), InkHeart series, Mulan, Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, Shannara series, Stargate SG-1/Atlantis, Runelords series. I think that's all of them, there may be more. It's hard to keep track of them all, especially since I don't DD about the old ones anymore.
Sounds like fun!
1. My DW is in Europe, somewhere. Probably Finland or England. Sometimes it is in my own country, though, when I'm daydreaming of people I know in real life.
2. I daydream both about normal people and characters I've created. And yes some of them have superpowers.
3. Uhh, well, one of them is an airplane mechanic. There are writers, artists, and reporters in my daydreams too.
4. I often get inspired to add conflicts based on what I've been through. I use the daydreams as a way of "fixing" the conflicts, for example instead of regretting things that I've done I pretend in my head that I have done it in a different way.
5. Most of my characters are brave, creative, and loving. There are some shy characters too and characters that basically hate a lot of things. It depends on the mood I am in.
6. Hahaha yes! Gerard Way, My Chemical Romance, Marina and the Diamonds, Sherlock Holmes, Alex from "A Clockwork Orange", the "Cabin Pressure" radio comedy characters, Tintin (comic), etc.
1. Where is your DW located? Is it your own country or at least planet Earth and if so, are you DDing about modern times or the past/future? Or is your DW located in other worlds/realities/galaxy?
My DW is always on earth. My character was born in Spain, but lives in LA. The time is the present.
2. This question is connected to the first one. Do you DD only about real people (planet Earth only) and somehow possible situations or do you have different races/species or supernatural elements in your DW?
Mostly real people/celebrities. Sometimes made up people, but always people I have never met.
3. What are the professions/occupations in your DW? Esp. those hold by the recurrent characters in your DW or even characters who you identify with (that is if you do identify with some of your characters).
My main character is the one who I wish I could be. A better version of myself, but not me. Her name is Gage Detton and she is my age. Absolutely beautiful, almost perfect in every way, but a little nerdy like me. She has been an actress since she was a baby and has grown up being one of the best actresses. She is the lead singer of a band as well who are number one on the charts all the time. Her and her famous best friend who she has known since they were 3ish own Sephora. She is a good person who donates millions to charity. Her main life is obviously VERY different than mine but some of the aspects of my life are incorporated into hers almost to make it that much more real in my mind.
4. Do you have a peaceful DW (quiet family life, hanging with friends, etc.) with little to no conflicts whatsoever... sort of like rose garden trope or are there (from time to time) any adversaries/precarious situations which the characters have to struggle through first?
My DD's are mostly peaceful because my own life is chaotic i like to keep my thoughts as peaceful as possible. They are also pretty funny. If I see or hear something funny on tv or movies i will add that to my DD. My character will always make people laugh. Yes my character has had to deal with the loss of her husband and raise two kids on her own.

I admire pretty much everything about my main character. She is everything I would like myself to be. My characters friends and boyfriend change from the mood I am in that day. Mostly everyone in my DW is nice to my character. How I wish real life was like.
One thing stays the same. My main character Gage has her best friend who is Raven Symone. They grew up together and are both actresses. Always there for each other and they are hilarious when they are together. Gage's boyfriends are always celebrities, but sometimes they are a different person who just looks like a celeb. They have ranged from John Hamm to Russell Crowe. I know this all sounds crazy but my mind is weird. I live everyday with all these scenerios in my head and they can change drastically every single day. It all depends on what I have seen on tv/movies or the music I have listened to. As much as I love this fantasy world I have created in my head I would like to only live in this world. I have to stop this. It is seriously an addiction and I have never ever told anyone. So please don't judge :) Please comment or message me if anyone has any ideas on how to get over this MD. I have done it for so long I don't know how to stop. I definitely need help.
1. My DW is on Earth. From Russia, the Galapagos Islands, to the USA. I shift from past to future.
2. I dream about real people, people I made up, and fictional characters.
3. We're too young to have jobs.
4.My characters have struggled a lot and are now living a peaceful life. I shift my DD to the troubleling times my characters have to the peaceful times.
5. The other inhabitants. (First my Boyfriend, the he becomes my husband later.
6. The Creatures, ImmortalHDFilms (on Youtube), Wolves of Mercy Falls, Maximum Ride, The Hunger Games (Books)
