Hi, I'm Andrew. I'm 18 and I just recently stumbled onto this whole daydreaming disorder business. For years, I have found myself consumed in thought but it never really clicked that I was daydreaming. I just considered it extensive thinking.

I can't say anything horrible has ever really happened to me. I have had a very unstable family life and most likely an abundance of anxiety problems, but other than that, the daydreaming has never really been a problem per se.

Here recently it has sort of become more.. troublesome because I find myself talking in my mind with characters. (Mostly when I'm very stressed or sad). I am completely aware that they're not real, but I started getting scared because sometimes I start seeing colors in colors (I have no idea how to articulate what I'm talking about. lol) and sparks just slowly coming out of people during classes and such. I am almost certain that so much stress in my senior year of high school has made this worse, and the biggest problem is really that I can't properly learn to drive because every time I try I just lose concentration completely and trail off the road. Every time. lol

I don't know, I've posted a lot on yahoo answers trying to find out if I should be worried and everyone just said I should go to a doctor, but I see no reason to pathologize everything. I don't trust doctors anyway. I just want someone to talk to who won't think I'm completely insane when I say this sort of stuff. I am a very creative person and when I'm not consumed in thought, I'm consumed in art and music. Anyway, I suppose I was just sort of introducing myself. I saw AmethysteRose on youtube after hearing about maladaptive daydreaming and I decided I would join this group. I'm so glad to have possibly found some answers and maybe some new friends that I can talk to about this.

Ok, well do what helps and be smart about it.  As for doctors..........they might be able to help you with some anxiety and things if you find the right one, but they probably won't know about Maladaptive Daydreaming.  It's a wide-spread condition but it's only been studied a few times, so not a lot of doctors have heard of it.  They'll probably just dismiss this part & tell you it's depression or something.  As for whether or not you should worry.......well, you just need to be educated and aware.  I think this condition has wondrous gifts and struggles that can get very bad if we're not careful.  I have a severe form.  Many don't have it as bad as me, but you still should be aware of how bad it can get if you don't keep it under control.  If it can be managed, I think we can all learn to benefit from it while controlling the negative side effects.  If you're not careful and always tell yourself that it's just fine then it may slowly get worse & worse before you realize it.  It often sneaks up on you.  Just be aware and try to manage it.

As for thinking you're crazy.....DON'T.  It's just a way of thinking.  It comes with a lot of wonderful creativity and strength.  We can work through problems in our own heads that most people would need a therapist to work through. We can think through complex issues really quickly and learn a lot.  We're constantly exercising our brains, so it makes us smarter.  We have to be careful because the feeling can become addictive.  We get addicted to our own brains.  If you think about it........there are so many worse things we could get addicted to than thinking.  I mean other people do harmful drugs and go on violent rages.  We just think too much.  Many people in this world could use that problem.  It's silly to judge ourselves for doing something that is initially good.  We just need to be careful, so it doesn't take over our lives.  Too much of anything isn't good for us.  No one's going to judge you here.  We're here to help, and together we can educate others as well.  One day I hope to educate the world about this, so doctors will know how to help us, and others who think they're alone will know they aren't.  Be proud of yourself for speaking up, and know that you can help others who are too shy to talk just by sharing your story. You never know who'll see it and relate.  You can really do some good.  You don't have to be normal.  In fact, be as weird as possible.

If you have any questions, feel free to message me any time.  I'm not always on the site, but I'm frequently online & check my email about a billion times a day.

Thank you so much! Yes, I considered seeing a doctor at one point, but when it comes down to it, the daydreaming probably helps the anxiety anyway. I really just need somewhere to talk. I feel like there is so much going on in my head and so little going on outside most of the time, but I can't exactly mention that to everyone. It can just be so beautiful sometimes that I want to talk about it but I can't except for in my head, but I fear doing that too much because I don't want things to become worse than they are now.

Anyway, thank you so much again for creating such a great site. This could be so beneficial to so many people!
