I'm asking this because I took a personality test to see what personality disorders you had (or acted like you had) and one of them was Avoidant Personality Disorder, and it had some of the symptoms. One of them was 'creating an elaborate fantasy world', and, because my mind and ears are now over tuned to the words 'Maladaptive', 'Daydreaming', 'imagination', 'fantasy', etc., I instantly thought of this disorder. So I wondered, is MD a side effect of other disorders (in some cases), or is that just a symptom, or is it the psychologists getting confused because some people with Avoidant Personality Disorder have MD as well, or is it some other idea that my ill, tired brain can't think of?

It's probably the last thing in the list. *facepalm* < That's an example of what will probably happen when I read someone's reply. You'd think that since my mind is almost constantly thinking (well, daydreaming ; D) I wouldn't overlook basic things that are the answer (like a better way to word that XD) but I do, so... XD

There are lots of disorders that have fantasy and disconnection as possible side effects.  That doesn't mean they're all the same.  This is something different.  Lots of disorders have overlapping symptoms.  I know it can get confusing, but if there weren't important differences then they wouldn't be separate disorders.  I've been to doctors and asked them about Avoidant Personality Disorder along with all the others that were suggested to me before I found out about MD.  While a doctor couldn't tell me about MD (because most haven't heard of it), they did all tell me I didn't have any of the others.

As for my situation, I feel it is part (not all) of an dissociation disorder. I have had early childhood trauma which caused me to develop some coping mechanisms. I don't have dissociation identity disorder but as I wrote in other responses, I am defiantly on the spectrum somewhere.  A lot of disorders do overlap..for example a person with a borderline personality disorder might have social anxiety disorder and/or an eating disorder etc.

I know this is not true for everyone but I do think that trauma could be the reason for some with MD. (as with me)
