I'm not just talking when you're too excited to go to bed, I'm talking about when you're already in bed, and you're trying to fall asleep, but you're brain jolts you awake every few minutes, and then wakes you up earlier than you're supposed to get up.
I had this for many years, and it got so bad that it made me incredibly sick. I would feel horrible all day and even hallucinate and dream while awake. I couldn't take it anymore. I tried every natural method I could find, but nothing worked, so I started taking prescription sleeping pills, and that was the only thing that helped. I fall asleep quickly and get plenty of sleep every night. There are lots of things that you can try like sleepy tea, relaxation techniques, white noise, etc, but if all else fails, talk to a psychiatrist about getting a prescription. Generic Ambien is pretty cheap, and it works.
I do sometimes have trouble falling asleep, more because of a bit of anxiety than daydreaming. I visualize counting backwards from 100 to 1, and try to see each number in a fancy script in my mind. Dedicating my brain to imagining something dull can help.
Ugh, this happens every night for me. What I typically do is try to think of nothing but how soft my pillow is, sorry its not really scientific, but its the only thing that ever works for me unless I'm completely exhausted. I hope this helps...
