Has anybody else read this book? I found it by accident in a box of books by the side of the road. Synopsis (I didn't write this):
I Never Promised You a Rose Garden is the story of a sixteen-year-old who retreats from reality into the bondage of a lushly imagined but threatening kingdom, and her slow and painful journey back to sanity.
Chronicles the three-year battle of a mentally ill, but perceptive, teenage girl against a world of her own creation, emphasizing her relationship with the doctor who gave her the ammunition of self-understanding with which to help herself.
The book is semi-autobiographical, based on the life of the writer herself. I think I read somewhere that she was diagnosed with schizophrenia at the time, but by today's standards would likely have been diagnosed differently.
I won't spoil any of it, because it's a pretty intense read, but I often think of this book in relation to my own struggle to stop relying so much on daydreaming as a coping mechanism. Other people on this site might relate even better than I did to her story, since she creates an entire world.
There's also a movie, but it was...not great.
Anyway, I highly recommend it!
