Maladaptive Daydreaming: where wild minds come to rest
While on amazon looking through the inspirational books category I stumbled upon a book by Eckhart Tolle called "The Power Of Now". I am telling you all, it's a game changer. I would like to start sharing excerpts from it with you guys. I don't think the author was ever an MD'er, but he experienced a very deep depression which he recovered from at 29 years old. He did it by separating himself from his mind. I know, it sounds crazy, but it's one way to regain total control over your thoughts.
He says the mind is always thinking, there are always images there, memories, wishes, fears and a constant monologue (for us, there is constant dialogue lol). He says the mind is always thinking and that it's not YOU. Rather, you are outside of your mind listening to it. You are separate from your mind, but have allowed it to trick you into thinking you are one entity.
You have the ability to realize your brain is thinking. So, you're not your mind, rather, you're outside of your mind. The book asks that the reader start listening to the conversations of the mind and keep it separate from you. It's not your identity. It's a 3 pound organ that sponges up everything that ever happens to you or around you from the time you're born until you die. Everything that ever happened is in there. Every wish, memory and every fantasy. Realize that you're not your mind. It's simply an organ that will continuously collect information and make mental movies out of whatever it collects.
We're just observers of our minds. Those of us who MD, give our minds the stage. We pretty much allow our minds to hijack all of our time. We allow ourselves to be whisked away by irresistible fantasies that we've helped the mind create. It's pure trouble in the long run because we're supposed to be thinking about other things. We're supposed to be developing social skills and learning life lessons that will make us productive people in real life. We've put too much stock into our worlds. We feel emotionally connected to these beautifully engineered plots and characters, but what do they give us in return? They're hidden within your imagination when you need help, when you're crying and alone and wondering why you are the way you are. Are any of your characters there to truly help you? Or are they just collecting your spare time...which you'll never get back. We've made our minds full of wonder and rabbit holes that lead to great escapes like nothing the real world has to offer (so the mind has convinced us).
Now, remember, it's just an organ doing all of this. It's just 3 pounds of meat. It's not YOU. You are simply observing it, recording it or listening to it. YOU are actually everywhere and infinite. You're not your mind. You are WITH your mind. After this life in this body, you move on. Then you will be with something else (which you should gain control over). You are supposed to be controlling your mind, but it is controlling you. It has taken you hostage and has created false fears in order to keep you a victim and make you feel powerless and confused.
The author makes mention of the mind being our worst enemy when we don't separate from it.

Yep, I'm referring to the brain. It's always operating regardless of us being conscious of it. So, it's definitely independent of us. I figure, if it is indeed independent, that makes it a thousand times easier to tackle the problem. It's harder to isolate it when you include yourself (consciousness) as the problem. It cannot be a problem with the conscious because, when we sleep (unconscious) we return to the mental movies full throttle. So that's the normal mental behavior while ASLEEP. However, when we're awake (conscious) our minds are trying to lure us into dreams as if we're still asleep. The insult is that we AREN'T sleeping.lol We deserve to be awake and conscious of all things around us while awake.
