I had a mental assessment yesterday

Hello all! I finally went to a mental health clinic and yesterday I was diagnosed with Bipolar 1, PTSD, and some type of dissociative disorder. When I told the therapist I pace my apartment for 3-4 hours at a time she was shocked. I don't think she ever heard of this. I just hope counselling helps, I've tried it before and it didn't do squat...kinda like beating a dead horse. Has anyone else sought professional help? Any suggestions I should recommend to my counselor?

Aw man, you should have seen what they dignosed me with the first time I went. IT was like this huge list of ADHD, Dissociative, Deppression, Anxiety, OCD, Borderline, and Schizophrenic. I think they where just guessing or something =/

Like you, they where just lost when I told them about the pacing and daydreaming for 7-8hrs everyday. Never heard of such a thing!!!!

Now, I'm not saying your diagnosis is wrong in any way!!! Just because I had a bad experience with my Doc doesnt mean yours is the same. After all, my assesment was done by an intern not a real doctor, Pyscologist, therapist or whatver.

Sooo, yeah. I say if you are up and ready to go to counselling go ahead! Why not? I would havee done it if I had the money and well, opened up more. (I dont like talking to others face to face about my feelings) but, if you have the determination to open up and seek change, do it! You never know, you might actually beat all these disorders you have with sheer will power!!! That would be incredible!!! =D

There is nothing magic with counseling: therapist does not cure you. Only you can do it, but you just can't do it alone. She can show you the way but you must be prepared to go yourself.

I have been meeting a therapist for years, I am not going so often now. Most of the time she does not want to speak of DD because she means I have to work with reality. In a way she is right but it upset me.

@EludeMyFantasies: I totally agree with you about diagnose, I had/have PTST and depression but I don't care, I mean what good does it make to have a label to put on it? It certainly is a help for the therapist but for me it’s all the same. I’m a person not a diagnostic. I’m happy my therapist is not so focus on diagnostic an three/four letters cryptic codes.

If you're going to bring up your daydreaming to your counselor, I'd definitely be prepared to explain it.  To help you, be sure you let them know that real doctors have studied this and believe in it.  I'd take copies of the recent studies done as well as the articles written about it, which can be found on the Links page.  Most doctors probably won't have heard of this, so you'll have to be the expert.
