Dear Claire,  I also want to congratulate on being such a supportive parent.  MD is not easy to live with, its hard to ID the triggers and even harder to prevent them. (Sometimes a name or a siren triggers one of my daydreams and it can last a weekend or longer) As a result, it can be very difficult to talk to someone about even if it is someone you trust.  Your teenager is extremely brave.  Be sure to tell him/her this because he/she maynot be feeling it. I don't know what will help because I am trying to find that out too.  I told my mother about 10 years ago while I was in college and I told her some signs to look for when I into a daydream.  When she saw these signs she would talk to me, get me out of the house, go to my room and "borrow something" do anything to try to get me back into the real world.  This didn't always work but at least I knew that someone noticed me acting oddly.  I hope this was helpful.

First of all, I want to congratulate you on being a loving and open-minded parent who wants to help her child.  I read about so many parents (and doctors, for that matter) who dismiss this condition as just depression or teenage hormones.  You're one of the good ones, and I'm sure you'll find some ways to help.  Unfortunately, this is still a fairly new condition, so we don't have any magical cures.  It's sort of up to us to figure out what works and educate the world about it.  I've posted some tips that people have suggested on the main page, along the right.  The only thing that's worked for me is distraction....finding other activities that I like so much that they distract me away from daydreaming.  Others have reported that meditation has helped, so if your child can do it, it's worth a shot.  If you want more information, you can find some on the links page.  You might also post a blog or discussion asking for advice from other members. We're here to support you.
