Introduction and daydreaming re: personal relationships and ludopathy

Hi, I'm Ernesto, 35 y.o. Computer Engineer from Mexico. I came to know this site thanks to Scientific American Mind, and decided to register and start right away with my own views on "too much daydreaming".

My first experience on too much daydreaming seems to be in the personal relationships scene; While I am able to conduct apparently fair relationships with people, I do not enjoy them that much. I tend to consume my time "playing" how relationships go or could go with people, either real or real-but-distant (i.e. movie stars) or plainly fictional, like characters from a novel. Love relationships so far have proved somewhat of a losing game for me, because either I fall totally in love with someone not as keen on me as I am on her (I could be somewhat like the aussie actress character on the movie The Apartment, if you allow me an extreme comparison), or I have a real relationship that goes bad because I daydream too much about getting involved with someone "better" (i.e. more alike to my prefixed idea on what a couple should be).

Also, I guess my daydreaming can be somewhat connected to my ludopathy... I hope I convey the right concept with that. I like to gamble, play lotto, and somesuch. While  I've never had major gambling problems (of the kind I lose everything I have just to gamble), I do realize that in gambling, I spend money I could use more efficiently in other things, because I get "psyched" on minimal wins being the start of a winning streak. Indeed, I've a coherent, rational view on how gambling is a losing game for me, but that doesn't seem to be enough to stop me from seeking the false target of easy money by gaming.

About my way of understanding life: I'm definitely atheistic, keen into science and neurology in particular. I do have a higher-than-average knowledge over brain structure, neurons and glia, and circuits in the brain (skeptic as I am, I doubt even the more advanced neuroscientists know a lot of what *really* goes on in our brains, but I do listen to what they've got to say).

So here's my first contribution, I hope to read your replies to it, and any advice on my best use of the forum in the future would also be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

-Ernesto

Hi *waves*

I think that the best way to use this forum is to interact with other members on live chat, comment on posts and such.  As everybody on here is here to discuss, learn (and for some) eliminate their problem.  This way you may get a greater understanding of MD and learn how to better manage it.

You sound like a very interesting person.

Hi and welcome to wild minds!
I read somewhere that guys tend to take risks even though the odds are stacked against them winning. This probably explains why many men run for Congress and political positions more than women.
