Maladaptive Daydreaming: where wild minds come to rest
I cannot believe that after living with my secret world for 30+ years, there is not only a term for it, but other people with it too. I only by chance happened upon the term yesterday during a google search for symptoms of depression, after my daydreaming, which has been fairly under control my whole life, had gotten out of hand the last 4-5 months and has started to have a real physical and psychological impact on me. Somewhere I saw an article with a headline "5 uncommon symptoms of depression" and one of them was daydreaming. So then I googled "depression and daydreaming" and oh my gosh if I didn't happen upon the term "maladaptive daydreaming" and I cried I just couldn't believe it. There my soul was, laid out for me right on my computer screen. Everything I have felt my whole life and kept to myself. I have never shared with anyone, this secret world. I feel like this is a huge turning point in my life and I am so glad to have found this place.

Welcome to the community! We're glad you found us. :D
You'll find we all have similar stories to yours - most of us felt like we were the only ones like us in the world. But now we've formed our own little support system (thanks to Cordelia).
Feel free to join in on discussions and come say "hey" in the chat (most active during European evening hours). We're a "quirky" friendly bunch. ;-)
Thank you...its very exciting to see I am not alone and seeing that this is in fact a real thing, has given me such relief when I have been struggling with the disconnect the most lately. Just over 24 hours ago, I didn't even know that that was what I was feeling, but reading the posts have been life changing and validating. I would definitely say that I can fit in with "quirky"! ( no matter how much I have tried to suppress it over the years ;) )
Oh never suppress quirky...totally embrace it! We can never have enough quirky! ;)
I remember that freeing feeling of finally knowing that there was a name for this "thing". Glad to hear you're already fitting right in. :)
You've been doing it for 30 years! At what age did you start day dreaming? if you don't mind me asking. I'm trying to make some connections. Welcome to the community!
Yeah welcome to Wildminds mrs carr!
I had the same feeling whene I discovered I wasn't alone :) I hope we can help you cope with this thing that you have had your whole life, help you accept yourself and help you feel better in general (these are things the kind people of this site helped me with anyways ;) )
You can join the main chat at any time, though it has it's peak moments whene the most of us are online (which is in the evening for Europeans) we talk about all kind of things: MDD, depression, lonelyness, self-acceptance,... but also games, books, movies, fun videogames and just random crazy topics :p Some people also don't talk and just watch haha and that's okay too. The people here are nice and I'm convinced anyone would fit in here :)
Again, welcome to Wildminds Network!
Thanks! I don't mind sharing, now that I'm in good company. ;) I started at about the age of 5 (I'm35 now). They were never too much of an issue as a child, but as I have become older they have started to really consume so much of my time that I was really starting to think I was going crazy.

I'm really glad to be here! Glad to read and learn about everyone else and what they all have been through. Though I am going to have to get used to European time I guess! Its 9am here and I just got to work. ;)

Well to be honest there are many americans and people from other parts of the world here too. It just so happens to be that in the past this place wasn't realy active, and there were only some europeans using the chat at evening hours. By now many people have joined and started making use of the chat and so they still show up at +- the same time as 'back in the days', even though a lot of them actually aren't europeans.
If you got online at a time that is suitable for most people who live near your timezone, there's a big chance you'll meet a lot of people too. I wouldn't know lol. I always meet the same people that appaer in the evening ;)
