Does writing help you? Why or why not?

A couple of friends have suggested I write about the people I make up.  I'm wondering if any of you have tried to translate daydreams into written fiction and how you experienced the process.  Thank you.

I get easily frustrated because the proces is so slow, whereas in my head everything is instant. I tend not to write big epics but scenes. When I DD I do dream up epics, but I generally get stuck on the same scene for a few days/weeks, then move on to another one etc, and it's usually the scene that's running through my head that I try to write. But what amounts to a few shots of action in my head is usually hours of work.
