In the first half of this webinar, Eli Somer, PhD, will give a talk titled, 'Maladaptive Daydreaming: an unrecognized mental health problem'. This webinar will focus on maladaptive daydreaming (MD), or daydreaming disorder, a psychological concept first introduced in 2002 to describe a time consuming absorption in fantasy that can create distress and/or interfere with social, academic, vocational or other important areas of functioning. Research findings show a relationship between MD and dissociative absorption, ADHD, OCD, depression and anxiety. Evidence suggests MD could fit the description of a behavioural addiction. Studies indicate that a subgroup of individuals with MD have been subjected to adverse childhood experiences such as emotional neglect or abuse, or social anxiety and isolation suggesting a potential emotional regulation role for MD. Participants in this webinar will be able to identify MD, know how to assess it and consider possible relevant intervention strategies.
