So we had the first major snowfall in my city today! It was a record for the longest gone without snow and true to form, people have managed to forget how to drive in winter conditions. This always surprises me. We are definitely a winter city and yet snow and ice always manage to baffle drivers. I understand that in some cases, you just lose control, but when people are still pushing the speed limit and making idiot moves on black ice, com'n.. that's just dumb.

I had to take my friend to choral (usually a 10min drive, max) and got home 90 minutes later!! All major roads were backed up and everywhere around people were sliding, skidding and just generally being screwed over by the ice. My Dad just bought massive winter tires, so I feel pretty lucky and don't slide much but some people were really struggling to stay on the road. To get into downtown there's a pretty big hill to drive up, oh my word... so much chaos! --On the hill going up , a bus had stalled, people were rolling backwards, or trying to make sudden illegal U-Turns on icy hazardous roads to turn back down the hill (stupid.. stupid.. stupid..). The side down was even worse! Cars were inching along lest they slide into oncoming traffic, (me!) and two buses were stalled and taking up lanes. Two other cars were also blocking lanes and had hit things. At this point a bus driver was directing traffic as his bus was lodged in a pole, I doubt police could even access the hill very well, and snow plows and sanding trucks were busy in other parts of the city.

In the midst of all this chaos (i can't quite describe how hectic it was) a man had come out of his apartment, armed heavily with two boxes of Table Salt and was determinedly sprinkling down his salt onto the road whenever and whereever he had a chance. I found this man to be so incredibly sweet.! It was a cold day, there was chaos outside of his apartment and he took the time and effort to come down, with his supply of salt, and do his part to aid his fellow citizens by salting the road for traction. This blog is just a little "huzzah" for unsung daily heroes who do their part for their fellow man. While this may not have been a gesture or sacrifice of any grand claim, it was clearly just kindness and thoughtfulness on his part. So good sir, for the salt you sacrificed, and the gesture that made me smile-i say "thank you and huzzah!" you warmed my heart.

I enjoyed reading this. Although that sounds quite freaky with the cars sliding backwards and such, your story had a heart-warming ending... the salt man. =D Well, while you're enjoying (I think) your winter land, it suddenly feels like spring here. I took a walk outside again today, wearing short-sleeves and feeling hot in the sun. I think it's going to be warm all week. I don't mind! xD
