Creating a Virtual World

My pastor at church does watercolor paintings. I saw one at a church auction, but I hadn't thought much about it until I recently found free software that allows anyone to create Myst-like games. I'm hoping to use software like Render3D (also free) to create a 3D world of his paintings and then turn it into a game in which he can then explore his own paintings. I can add sounds and music, in-game movies. I'm going to spend the next year developing it - I hope it turns out the way I envision it in my head.
