My name is Rachel and I'm 14. When I was 11, I casually went into a daydream, expecting it to be no different than any other normal daydream I had. It wasn't. I never left that daydream. I was curious to why I was doing this, and why I had never heard of this happening before. I wanted to know what was happening to me. So, I started doing research on mental illnesses when I was 11. I found I had an interest with mental illness, but I didn't find anything I could say I had. After a year, a friend who was dealing with a similar problem told me about this thing called Maladaptive Daydreaming she found on Tumblr. I read the Tumblr entry and was immediately terrefied and excited at the same time. I did more searching on this "Maladaptive Daydreaming" and found that reading the articles was like reading articles about me. I wanted to know more and more, and I found that whenever I researched Maladaptive Daydreaming, I became happy, knowing that I wasn't the only one. I continued researching other mental illnesses I don't have, just because of my interest though. Also, I enjoy my daydreaming. I find it has many pros and cons, but I personally think the pros outweigh the cons. One pro is I'm never bored anymore, but a bigger pro is that I've always been a writer, I could get any fictional story down if I had an idea, but I could never come up with an idea. Until I started daydreaming. Now I believe one day I might be able to publish. At the moment, I'm pretty happy with my life and future, but I'm sure it will change soon. After all, I'm sure most of you can relate to having such a big secret to keep. I hope this web site will help me feel more in company whenever I feel alone. I hope one day I can live openly with my family about this, but until then, I'll have to make do with the loving family in my head. =D

Welcome and I'm so happy you found a group while you're still young and in need of that extra support.  Many of us didn't have that growing up and felt a bit like freaks with awesome imagiantion powers :D

I'm also a writer and using your gift really helps to get deep into the scene. Really notice the details and describe them clearly. It also helps you keep track of where people physically are as you write. I notice many authors (when i'm editing some of the stories) tend to mentlly lose a character's position, forgetting to say he stood up and crossed the room instead jumping from a convo in a chair to a convo at the fireplace. With our enhansed visualizations we can keep all the pieces where they belong as we are living it.  :)  Definite Pros!!!

I hope you can easily learn to deal with the cons are you get older and we are here for you when you need to talk.  How cool your friend has it too so at least you have someone around you to always go to.

You are lucky to have found this site.

You sound like an intelligent and creative young woman - I'm so glad you found this site too! While there are pro's to DDing, it sounds like you've already run into a con - the BIG secret, which means you've realized excessive DDing isn't quite "normal" (Heck, what IS normal anyway???) I'm not sure I'd call it a mental illness - it's just different. It becomes a problem when it begins to interfere with what you feel should be your normal life functions, such as self isolation, unrealistic expectations of the people around you, neglecting important activities in favor of DDs and so on.  I wish I'd had this place to meet other DDers when I was your age, but that was in the dark ages before the internet, Best of luck to you and welcome aboard!
