Where wild minds come to rest

Finally after long college time, I have a time too for writing this.

So yeah, I decided to change my drawing style. Although I may still use my realistic drawing... The reason are: (1) sometimes I have mood to draw but too lazy for doing some face details and (2) many people - okay I mean my big family - start to complain about my drawing style. In my religion, people who make something exact like human will burn in hell because they had challenge God's creation. My family are rather a religious one, very strict about rules.

It's kinda unfair though, when I saw many artisans with same religion make drawing style like me and not being complained. Although my dad never complain - only said to never color it too much. Beside it still debatable too, is the creation was human statue or also painting. Well, I'd rather to change my drawing style than quit my hobby.

At same time, I played some RPG games and found this style. By the way, this is created by Deep-Sea Prisoner in The Gray Garden game.

This style was simple, yet very expressing each character. Depend with the eyes, hair and the uniqueness. So at first I practice my first draw that use this style. Well, Dmitri is my first victim lol. And it worked at my first drawing.

Because this is a simple style, I love to continue with other characters. Even I'm planning to make this style for my novel illustration. But only fiction characters like Dmitri and his friends. While character that based on real people still in their realistic form.

This is example of my drawing that use Deep-Sea Prisoner style... To know what's happen in this, it related with this

After drawing this and that,,, I kinda felt guilty that I used person's style to draw my character. I asked my friend who like to draw too, and she said it's OK as long as I don't copy the person's original character too and stated it as my original drawing. But when I ask another friend, she/he said I need to use credit like "inspiration style from: Deep-Sea Prisoner". So I don't know what to do so I don't labeled as "plagiarism". And when I browsing with the same topic, mostly said that we could make it but never to publish it. From now, I think when I publish my novel, I must make credits "Thanks to them for their style inspires me".

This just make me felt sad because it looked like I don't have my own art style anymore. Which is became part of realization my DD too. I want to back, yet the previous problem blocked me to do that. yet this style also fit me too, since I want to differ each other uniqueness.

Any advice?

Thank you for the advice, Richard! you right, sometimes cartoony style is more better for illustration than the realistic one (although I want to do illustrations like in earlier Sherlock Holmes novel) :D

I love your new style! I often find it easier to draw in a more "cartoony" style for my characters to draw faster. Also, I only ever draw realistic if it were to go up on my wall as a finished piece of work. Sometimes I draw in a "disney" style with characters that look like they came straight from a movie. As long as you have something original in your style: like twist it up a little, I think it's fine!

You're welcome! :) I understand how you feel, because I worry a lot about plagiarizing other people's ideas too.

well thank you! I've been so worried for a month actually... this kinda sooth me.. yeah really, I don't interested too for using their character and make it as mine - as my dd character is already fun for myself :P

I rather like your new style! It's very expressive. I particularly like the way you drew Roman.

I don't think styles can be plagiarized, only specific characters and plots. But you are using your own characters so I don't think you should worry about anyone saying you "stole" from them.
