I’ve been daydreaming since i was a child, i didn’t know what daydreaming is or what i was doing. I just liked the feeling it gave me, it helped me coping with my depression and loneliness but when i got older i realized that half of my life i wasn’t actually living i was disconnected from realty. I don’t know its a weird feeling i don’t like it. But my therapist said that i was smart for choosing daydreaming instead of drugs or whatever to cope with my depression and anxiety, but every time it hit me when i realized that i was seriously disconnected from realty and now i don’t how to live without daydreaming, it’s like i’m addicted to it. Anyway my question is how do you guys daydream? Do you just listen to music and close your eyes?

Ops, to answer your question I do it compulsively, automatically all day long. It feels very unhealthy but I can't stop.

I too started, I think, from depression and loneliness. But now I use it to compensate for boredom & dissatisfaction in life. I get to be a whole other person in my other life; confident, accomplished, having intense and fulfilling relationships. I too get disconnected from reality. The danger zone is when it feels very real, like the person I'm fantasizing about is really a soulmate to me. It gives me a rush, the dopamine rush you get from cocaine, sex or falling in love. It's a pattern that I can't seem to stop. It's like being a crack addict

I don't need music to daydream nor i use it to daydream. But songs do give me content to daydream about.

Usually I just sit there or lay down and let the daydreams do their thing.  I find it's easier to get into them when I'm sitting in the dark because there aren't any visual distractions.  I can daydream while doing stuff, too, but if I'm going totally into my head then virtually any activity is way too difficult.

Oddly enough, if I listen to music it helps me to stay focused in reality.  I do this a lot while driving.  Because I'm so used to daydreaming, I find it difficult not to do even when I'm on the freeway.  So, I'll either have someone with me and talk to them to stay grounded in reality or I'll listen to rock and sing along.  The sounds keep me focused.
