Where wild minds come to rest

I recently told a friend of mine about MD and all of the problems it causes me. He seemed pretty worried about it. He recommended that I see a counsellor.

I'm pretty torn on this one. I just don't know how a counsellor would actually help. Also, I get pretty nervous talking to strangers.

I know a few people on this site have used counsellors in the past. Would you mind sharing your experiences to help me make a decision?

I saw a counsellor about MDing, and he was really understanding, and saying its completely normal, in the sense of the way MDing helps me to deal my traumatic past and stress, and just in general something that i enjoy doing. So it's not exactly a bad thing to MD, but if you feel it's taking over your life, like you do it way too much, its a good idea.

But even just talking about it, and how it helps you, if MDing is something that helps you. You can express that. Sometimes its better to tell someone you don't know, it gives a different point of view, a different opinion. As long as your comfortable with it.

I visited a psychotherapist 6 times (it was free, 'cause we decided it had got worse after the quakes so it counted as the government-paid quake counselling stuff) and, though it was kind of good, we never talked about the content or why I dd, just what I can do to reduce it, and she gave me similar tips as what she'd give someone with depression and anxiety, like don't just keep yourself busy during the day as it'll catch up with you at night when you've nothing to distract you and to give it a name, as if it's something that comes to me.

I don't know how much it'd cost you, but I think if you're tight on money, don't go, but if you can spend some, maybe try it out.

I've figured out that (I think) it's necessary for me, otherwise I'll feel tired (after a full day paying attention to computer and painting, I felt as if I'd been around people all day) but maybe I just gotta set some time for me to DD, and I didn't figure that out because of seeing Libby, I figured it out almost a year after the first session.

She was nice, though.

I have been to 3 visits. He was very open to my MD problem and took it seriously. He started off trying to see if discussing their content, maybe reasons behind them, would help reduce them. You know getting it out. I did feel better talking about it openly. But it hasn't reduced the MD for me. But I think it depends on what type of MD you have and what causes it. If it is an escape for you, counselling may well help allot. Mine is very different. The councilor suggested I try a hypnosis next.
